what do you mean by "ClassicMenu"? are you using Gnome or Unity?

Sorry I did'nt thought on this. I have also installed in the same PC the LXDE and Gnome desktop environments. I have just tried to see the help menu on these and they have no problem with the pdf icons. So, the problem seems to be specific to Unity.

I remember that in Oklahoma James McKinnon was also noting some strange behaviour in the gretl "File" menu in Ubuntu 13.04 using Unity. I have 13.04 on my laptop and have now taken a look at it. In particular in the File menu if you select "Open data"the submenu that emerges has two "Open" elements instead of "User file..." and "Sample file...". Furthermore, the icons of the Help menu are all lost (See the two snapshots).

Using Lubuntu (Lxde) in the same laptop I don't see any problem with the File menu and the icons are correct.
