No, I have not tried.
Now that I did, it works, but found another problem:
- With LANGUAGE=LANG=pt_BR the translation for Commands and Functions help are not showing.
- They only show when LANGUAGE=LANG=pt_PT
I was expecting that they would work for the main language pt.
This setting of variable LANGUAGE makes use a bit more tricky, because if I want to force pt_BR on the GUI it does not work.
I tried to set to forced Italian and it did not work. With that setting, I tried:
LANGUAGE=es_ES gretl
And changed to Spanish, but the setting remained Italian.
Conclusion, the forced setting of language in GUI is not working as expected.

Have you tried "LANGUAGE"?
For example:
