If you want (even in experimental mode), I have a domain where I can install and setup any application (mostly PHP based). The only not nice aspect is that my domain will be visible.

I currently have Moodle and some static pages. My domain is transformidea.com and we could have, for example, http://gretl_forum.transformidea.com.

About LaTeX to MathML or like, I have not searched. Today I have seen a sciencedirect.com paper with a MathJax plugin (and the results were not satisfactory) (http://authors.elsevier.com/a/1SpelhVEAhRzK)

I take a more detailed look for concrete math friendly apps.

software Q and A forums. As regards basic hosting functionality I'm
actually quite happy with sourceforge; I just don't much like their
forum format.

Well I looked around a little bit but honestly cannot come up with a concrete suggestion. There is obviously a lot of software that you can set up and run on your own server, which I would rather like to avoid.

One feature criterion that occurred to me is to be able to use LaTeX code in the postings to write math. Does anybody any (hosted) solution that does that?
