Hi,
I know it's a never-ending discussion whether to have a forum or to use
mailing lists. So this is just a "ping".
First I've just noticed that you need 4 clicks to get from the gretl
homepage to the view of current threads in the list. And that assumes
that you know where to click each time. So I think one way to make the
mailing lists more "forum-like" (in a passive read-only) mode is simply
to provide a more direct access to the archives.
Secondly, Allin said that we might want to shop around for the most
suitable platform, instead of just using sourceforge. Ok, but where to
go shopping? Any concrete suggestions? I volunteer to check them out.
Finally, as the Wiki is de facto dead, I wonder if the link from the
homepage should be removed. IMHO it could be mistaken for the
(non-existent) forum and then creates a bad impression.

obvious choice would be perhaps, something like github or
bitbucket.

Well I looked around a little bit but honestly cannot come up with a
concrete suggestion. There is obviously a lot of software that you can
set up and run on your own server, which I would rather like to avoid.
One feature criterion that occurred to me is to be able to use LaTeX
code in the postings to write math. Does anybody any (hosted) solution
that does that?

I currently have Moodle and some static pages. My domain is
transformidea.com and we could have, for example,

About LaTeX to MathML or like, I have not searched. Today I have seen a
sciencedirect.com paper with a MathJax plugin (and the results were not
satisfactory) (http://authors.elsevier.com/a/1SpelhVEAhRzK)
I take a more detailed look for concrete math friendly apps.

We/you would be responsible to keep the platform running and also to fix
security issues. But maybe that's just me.
What about setting up a stackexchange "comunity"? There are already
some quite specific ones, such as TeX/LaTeX, Mathematica, Wordpress,
Tor...

I never used stackexchange (I do use stackoverflow :) ).
Looking at Area 51 (before becoming public and active), there are some
interesting areas but it shows some difficulties in passing the "public
beta" target. For example, Machine Learning was Closed, and Matlab is open
but with only 33 participants.
I searched with "Applied Mathematics", "Operations Research",
"Gretl" and
did not find meaningful groups.
Searching with "Statistics", found "Data Science" in public beta but
not in
the criteria to be Launched, and "Statistical Analysis" already Launched.
I searched with "Econometrics" and found "Economics" which is Closed
after
206 days in Beta.
(found a community of my interest "Software Quality Assurance & Testing" ;)
)
Well, after these searches I am pessimistic on trying to create a Gretl
community, but if the community would be Econometrics less pessimistic.
Finally, the "Statistical Analysis" community is named, Cross Validated and
the intro text is:
"Cross Validated is a question and answer site for people interested in
statistics, machine learning, data analysis, data mining, and data
visualization. It's 100% free, no registration required."
There are questions specific to applications like R or SPSS, for example:
- "How to analyze 2^k design with replicates in SPSS (or R)?" (no answers)
- "Is there a method to plot the output of a random forest in R?" (two
answers)
This is to conclude that a specific Gretl questions could be asked and
answered there. A search in this community with "Gretl", returned 60
questions, and the following stands out with 11 upvotes to one of the 3
answers:
- "Which statistical software is suitable for teaching an undergraduate
introductory course of statistics in social sciences?"
-- The most voted answer is:
"Maybe Gretl? http://gretl.sourceforge.net/
It is free and used at our University for undergraduate statistics."
We can also observe Tags for the questions, like "eviews" and
"gretl".
What can Allin and Jack do?
They can add a reference to the community in the users mailing list and
site, for people to search for Q&A like this:

You're right, it's not assured that we can get a "gretl community"
accepted on stackexchange. However, I think it would be worth a try.
If I don't hear strong objections I'll try putting in a submission
on their "Area 51". (I'm not saying that I am uniquely qualified to
make such a a submission, but it might help that I'm the founder of
the project; I can give them some statistics on gretl-user postings,
and -- with some help from Sven and Jack! -- on sourceforge tracker
entries and downloads.)

That's what I think too. But the stackexchange format could be quite
useful, if we can get in the door. Might give us some additional
visibility.

gretl tag,
perhaps we could start answering and helping people and by that creating
a stronger community over there. I think that would also give it a
better visibility, when searching gretl related issues on any search
engine, or?
It probably makes sense to focus on the stats.statsexchange.com
community, which has a very broad focus on statistics and econometrics.
I doubt that you get your own community only for gretl and perhaps we
should focus more on using already existing communities, but that's just
my opinion. :-)

Just an update:
I have now registered with "Cross Validated" (which to my understanding
is an alias or the same as the Statistics area within Stackexchange.
I've answered some questions there, but the only gretl-related answer
was "no, gretl doesn't have multivariate ARCH".

I'm thinking about registering also with "Stackoverflow" which AFAICS is
the Stackexchange area for questions about the workings of software
packages in general.
So if we want to follow up on that idea to use other forums instead of

BTW: a multivariate GARCH function package should be on its way (thanks to
Francesca di Iorio for helping me on this). If anyone is interested in a
beta release for testing, I'll be happy to provide it. Not before 15/6,
