Hi

I have an xlsx datafile comprising 10 rivers labelled 1..10, 24 observations dated 2000-2023 plus 5 variables (See attached screenshot). I have use File open command specifying it is an xlsx file which it reads and then produces an error message.

Found 11 Variables and 240 observations!!!

Name missing for variable 7 !!!

I am using Gretll version 2025c

I get the same error message if I specify File, New Data set, Panel data with  n=10 and t=24 and then append the data. 

The full dataset is also appended for information. Advice welcomed as I cannot move forward without getting Gretl to read swhat is a basic XLSX file. I have in earlier versions had no problems loading similararly structured stacked time series for panel data analysis

What program did you use to create this file? For some bizarre reason, cell L14 is nonempty, although it looks like it is. I'm not knowledgeable enough with excel to explain why this happens, but:

1. the xml document contains the fragment "<c r="L14" t="s"><v>4</v></c>", which I interpret as "cell L14 contains 4", although it's invisible to the eye (at least in LibreOffice and Gnumeric)
2. If you navigate to the top of column L and press Crtl-down, the cursor does indeed jump to cell L14 (again:tried this with both LibreOffice and Gnumeric), although it seems to contain nothing.

This confuses the importer. If you delete a few columns to the right of column G ("MSW_PCT"), then the file becomes readable.

I guess we could try to robustify our importer, but I have no idea on how we could find a workaround for cases like this.
