The Android app UserLand provides a version of Linux on an Android tablet that has not been rooted.  The basic app is free, but you need to install the extras if you wish to run the Gretl GUI.  The depository for Debian Linux accessed by the app as gretl 2021a.   You need a basic knowledge of Linux to get it working.  Out of curiosity, I tried to use it a long time ago.  This evening, I got it working on a Samsung A9+.  It crashed several times, but I did load a sample file and do a regression.  I would not like to have to depend on it.   As stated already, you would be better off with any PC or laptop.

Dear Gretl users,
I have a student without access to a laptop and she wants to install gretl in a tablet (Android, Lenovo TAB K11)

Ahh, no chance.

However, something seems to be happening in that area: https://xdaforums.com/t/android-16s-terminal-app-is-a-full-linux-virtual-machine-vm-environment.4764921/

As it says, you need Android 16, and it's probably not for beginners.

Moreover, I reckon that running a linux distro in a VM on a tablet should be horribly slow and inefficient, not to mention potential crashes. To be explicit, far worse than what you'd get on a 100€ laptop with Windows 10 on (just to reiterate).

Personally I'm also a fan of a full PC (laptop), so it's a good piece of advice (apart from the Win10 part perhaps). But there are many people and students around who come to classes with a tablet only. Especially if you have to carry your equipment the whole day because you don't have an office, I can understand why. (The costs of managing an additional device is also non-negligible IMHO.)

About the slowness, I'm not so sure these days. It would be interesting to hear some experiences, but probably not many people on this list have tried it already I guess.

cheers
