So... I've now built a new GTK+.framework myself, on 10.6.8.
This one should be a direct drop-in replacement for the
framework we've been using up till now -- on intel macs
running OS X 10.6 or higher. And the font handling should be
OK.

I'd be grateful if people could test this build. To give it a
try, do the following (but please read to the end first!):

Now check that gretl runs OK. Although it's not essential, you
may want to use the current gretl snapshot:

Since the problem that started all this was on Lion, I'm
particularly interested to see if gretl works there with this
new GTK build, but I'm also interested in results on 10.6.

Dear Allin, I installed the new GTK+ on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (or Mac OS X 10.6) and Gretl didn't crash. But I noticed some differences between the new and the old GTK+.

The first difference is related with the number of fonts available for use with Gretl (via GUI, Main window -> Tools -> Preferences -> Fixed font or Menu font):

New GTK+
Number of fonts available for gretl output windows: 12
Number of fonts available for menus and labels: 43

Old GTK+
Number of fonts available for gretl output windows: 25
Number of fonts available for menus and labels: 233

The second difference is the look 'n' feel of Gretl windows. Please take a look at the attached files Old GTK.png and New GTK.png. IMHO the old one is the best.

The third difference is the gnuplot graphs. Please take a look at the attached files Old GTK (gnuplot graph).png and New GTK (gnuplot graph).png. I used exactly the same command to generate these files.
