That's right -- "they" being Yahoo, not the authors of the contributed gretl package.

There is another data-retrieval package called "getQuandl" by a different author. Perhaps that might be an option. (I don't have any practical experience with it, however. If you use it, feedback is welcome.)

BTW, the latest gretl version is 2017d. (And strictly speaking the packages are more or less independent of the gretl version.)
