Hi,
you could do "sudo ldconfig" and then try again. This seems to be
necessary (at least sometimes) since a while ago (at least on some
systems/distributions), although I have never really understood why...

Oh, darn. I'm afraid that didn't do the trick, Sven. By 'try again', I assume you meant reconfigure gretl from scratch after -sudo ldconfig-. Unfortunately I get the same error message from Kickoff, viz:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KDEInit could not launch '/usr/local/bin/gretl'
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish I could be more positive, but any more ideas? (I suspect the icon is a hangover from the -gretl- version I removed from my Muon Software Centre - v1.9.6 - and is expecting to fire that up then complains that it can't.)
