Thanks everybody,

I had been following those instructions for Gretl, but I did not follow them for the GTK installation. Now that I have, the Gretl is opening.

I did however get GTK framework open; is it possible that I need to do something in GTK to get Gretl running?

It's not clear what you are exactly doing.
You should be doing the following

1. download gretl-1.9.9-intel.dmg.gz
2. unpack this file with Archive Utility to get gretl-1.9.9-intel.dmg
3. double click on gretl-1.9.9-intel.dmg and navigate in the Finder
4. Drag Gretl.app to the Applications folder (it is not a file)

Before you can run Gretl you must have X11 installed.
You can check this by finding out if there is an application  X11.app in /Applications/Utilities.

If there is no X11.app then you won't be able to run Gretl.
You will have to install it from the Snow Leopard installation disk.

Assuming you have X11 then you start Gretl by double clicking on Gretl.app in /Applications.
You should see a Gretl icon in the Dock and an X11 icon.
Then you wait because the first time it takes some time for initialization.

You click on the X11 icon to activate Gretl's window. Not on Gretl's icon; that doesn't work.

I have a Macbook Pro version 10.6.8, and after I follow the instructions on downloading Gretl, the program itself refuses to open. When I click the Gretl Icon, it reopens the driver used to download the program, but it won't run the program itself. I've seen some tips including using X11 and the GTK framework to run the program, but typing in the README-suggested prompt in the xframe(cd /Applications/Gretl.app/Contents/Resources/bin ./gretl) produces no results. Any help you could offer in this problem would be much appreciated.
