Hello all,
I recently heard from a Free Software advocate in India who makes
a good point. His mail reads, in part:
"Though I don't know econometrics I have followed the development
of GRETL with some interest since I am both a teacher and student
of economics from India and a partisan of Free Software.
"However the majority of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances
who are into econometrics don't warm up to GRETL because there is
no step-by-step migration guide from their current econometrics
software to GRETL. I request you to consider including a lengthy
section or brief chapter in the User Manual of GRETL of a
step-by-step migration guide for
1. Migration from Stata to GRETL
2. Migration from SPSS to GTRETL
3. Migration from Eviews to GRETL
"E.g: If AAA is done this way in Stata then AAA is done in that
way in GRETL. If this can be done, I believe an important blow can
be struck at the hegemony of proprietary software in the field of
Econometrics."
I think this is an excellent idea (in particular with regard to
Stata and Eviews). Any volunteers for writing some material on
this? I'm not a good candidate myself since I spend all of my
time on gretl and have relatively little experience working with
proprietary software.

I think this is an _excellent_ idea. In order to kickstart the whole
process, adding some material to our Wiki
(http://gretlwiki.econ.univpm.it/wiki) may be useful as an intermediate
step.

Dear all
I agree. I was a Eviews user and now I am "migrating" to Gretl. In
particular, Eviews does not possibly have a traditional Chinese
version. But I can be a translator for zh_TW.po to make gretl
available in Chinese for Taiwan.
I've done a web page (for myself and for my students) to document the
comparison of some commands between Eviews and gretl.
For example, see

(though parts of the content are in Chinese)
Something like this can help myself in teaching. I think it can also
help people with experiences of Eviews.
And now I am writing a PDF book of a brief introduction to gretl (in
Chinese) and the free PDF book will be soon freely available over the
Internet.
Let me know if how I can help in the English world.

Dear Allin
The free PDF book for gretl in Traditional Chinese that I am writing
on is not a word-by-word translation of the original gretl Users's
guide. Do you think it can be included in one of the options under
[Tools/Preferences/general/Manuals] as a "Traditional Chinese?"
It is OK if you think that is not appropriate. But if you agree, let
me know how I can maintain the Traditional Chinese manual under gretl.
BTW, please let me know how to translate the text of gretl commands
and functions into Chinese.

This is really great! I already have a simple manual that introduces VAR and
Co-Integration analysis (through GUI) using both Gretl and EViews. I did it
as a complementary resource for a econometric course ministered by me at my
work. I think this could be helpful for us.
