Hi!
I sent a mail for our gretl list speaking about my problems with
accented filenames. Well, I hadn't solved my problem yet. Because of this I
try to use a PC (with Windows XP) computer to avoid these problems. But
another problem had arised!
I going to describe the problem to you with details:
(1) I opened gretl (version 1.7.8cvs build date 2008-09-22)
(2) I opened the datafile called "data9-7.gdt" (from the Ramanathan's
examples)
(3) I saved these file with another name: "Acentuação.gdt"
(4) I closed gretl
(5) I opened gretl again clicking in "Acentuação.gdt" twice
(6) I deleted the series 9, 10 and 11 (named SPRING, SUMMER and FALL,
respectively)
(7) I saved the database with these changes and closed gretl*
*After the "step 7", described above, I`d noticed that a new file, called
"Acentuação.gdt~" had appeared in the same folder of the file
"Acentuação.gdt". Before proceeding I had deleted this new file
("Acentuação.gdt~").
(8) I opened gretl again with a double click in the file "Acentuação.gdt"
(9) I opened the series called PRICE and choose the option "graph"
(10) I saved the graph as a session icon
(11) I closed the graph and tried to save the session with the name
"Acentuação Session.gretl". In that point the following message appears:
"zip error: File not found or no read permission (file '.Acentuação Session'
was not found)"
(12) After that message I tried to save the session with the name
"Acentuacao Session.gretl" (without accented characters). The software
(gretl) saved the session with success with the name "Acentuacao
Session.gretl"
(13) I closed gretl and when I'd tried to open the session file called
"Acentuacao Session.gretl"the following message appears:
"No such file or directory"
What's wrong? Am I doing any mistake? Any help are welcome!

Thanks for the report. I will check this on Windows as soon as I
can. (The procedure you described works without error on Linux.)
One little thing: filename.gdt~ (with a tilde on the end) is an
automatic backup of the last revision of your data file.

Update: I discovered a possible cause of the problem you
described, and there's a fix in the current Windows snapshot:

But I haven't been able to test it yet.

I'd tested with the new snapshot and it really worked fine!!!! Now,
only the OS/X snapshot remains with the problems.

described, and there's a fix in the current Windows snapshot:

Thanks! I am new to Mac, so I don´t know how to edit the profile or how to
create it. I searched for it but it doesn´t seem to exist? Can you give me
more details on how and where to create it?

Open a terminal window (either an X11 xterminal, or the native Mac
Terminal program under Applications/Utilities). Now, hopefully
the simple editor pico may be installed. In the terminal window,
type
pico ~/.profile
This file may or may not have some content already. Add the line
export LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8
and save the file: do Ctrl-X, 'y' for Yes to save, Enter to quit.
If pico is not installed you could do this instead:
echo "export LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8" >> ~/.profile

New subject: Problem with matrix command
Hello listers ! greetings from Paris !
I am currently working now on a script that i will soon submit to the
community. However, I think i have spotted a bug with possibly serious
consequences.
I am under WinXP running on 1.7.8 (not snapshot)
The script rely heavily on matrix commands and SVDs. I was puzzled to see that
the results provided by GRETL on certified data (ie, the data from papers, so
that i can be sure to have the good results) where completely at odds from
those of the paper !
Verifying the commands, I checked for any mistake left in the code. All the
formulae where ok, and conform to those exposed in the paper.
Then, as the data matrix is badly conditionned, (CI > 10^17...) i wondered if
there could be a numerical problem around (svd algorithm etc).
Finally is spotted the source of the error: the matrix per element
exponentiation seems to be falty. Try the small script :
matrix T = {1,0,0,0;0,0.5,0,0;0,0,1.5,0;0,0,0,0.125}

normally matrix, S whose elements are equal to : 1/sqrt(Tij) should be the
same as in matrix V. However, this is not the case and this was the cause of
my concern.
Now i use matrix S command and the results are in line with the papers i am
reproducing.
I think something may need to be fixed here.

There are two separate issues here:
1) the argument to the ".^" operator gets passed as 0.5 rather than -0.5.
This is a bug.
2) Even when the bug is fixed, you can't expect "T.^-0.5", since it
contains zeros, and 0^(-1/2) is not defined.

Actually, the bug is more general and has to do with expression parsing.
Just try "eval 4^-0.5"; OTOH, "eval 4^(-0.5)" works fine.

Thank you Jack, I was not aware of these problems, and did not checked the
computations on mundane examples like thoses you provided...
For now, everything runs fine so I will provide a script and hopefully
functions soon. Including the (ahhh!) long promised spatial autocorrelation
computations...

It depended on the 'level' of the expression: "eval 4--.5" was OK,
but "4^-.5" was not. Now fixed in CVS.
