Hi all,
I just ran across a problem trying to modify a data set. If I delete a variable, then do
ctrl-s (on windows 7), I get an error saying "s is not the name of a variable."
The same thing happens if I select "save data" or "save data as..."
from the file menu. In the latter case, the error happens at the end, after going through
all the dialog boxes.
My gretl version was a few weeks old, so I downloaded the latest cvs version &
it's still there.

How are you deleting the variable? I ask because on a quick look I
can't replicate this problem.

I tried the following: a) select the variable & hit the delete key, b) highlight it,
right-click & choose delete, and c) enter "delete v1" from the console
window. I get the error each time when I subsequently try to save the data set (either
ctrl+s or file -> save data).

No change, sadly. I should also mention that the same thing happens if I try file ->
save as, whether I change the file name or not.

that after deleting a series called "s", or is it always "s"
that appears in the message?

Yes, I checked the build date before my last message. And yes, it's always
"s" in the message -- the variable name is v1. At first I thought I was hitting
alt instead of ctrl or something like that.
So I delete v1, then any means of trying to save the resulting data file results in
"s is not the name of a variable."
Sorry, I should've clarified that to begin with.

the snapshot I've just put up.

At first I thought it still wasn't working, then I discovered what might be the real
problem. Seems that the directory I was trying to save the modified file to was read-only.
So if I delete v1 & try to save the original file, I still get the same error. But
when I saved a copy of the original file into \documents\gretl (created on windows),
things work fine.
Looks like this is more of a windows issue that gretl. I'll try changing permissions
on my desktop tomorrow & see what happens.

OK, I'll admit I'm totally mystified. As I said, I couldn't
replicate the problem, even on Windows -- that is, a weird error
message on try to save a data file after deleting a series -- so
I've been trying to guess what might be going wrong.
This has been useful to a degree, in that I've cleaned up some old
and possibly questionable code to do with saving data in the gretl
GUI.
But as for permissions problems, well, I've just tried altering
permissions on files or directories so as to make saving impossible
(on Linux) and in each case, when I try to save the data, I've got
a suitable error message telling me that permission is denied.
