gretl on OS X
by Allin Cottrell
One thing that occurs to me as we get ready to release 1.5.1: are
there any Mac users on the list who might be able to create a build
of gretl on a reasonably current version of OS X?
I'm able to build gretl on OS X 10.2.4, which is now quite dated,
and even that only on suffrance (it's my wife's computer!).

RE: Some technical problem for translation
by Florent Bresson
I don't forget to load the key with pageant, so I
don't understand the cause of the problem. Just a
question with the key. When I create the key with
PuTTYgen, I have to replace the text string with
"f_bresson(a)shell.sourceforge.net" (f_bresson is my
login on sourceforge). Am I right ?

more on scatterplot OLS fits
by John Paravantis
Just an additional point on Jack's remark.
It is not that the OLS fit is simply NOT SHOWN on a scatterplot when the
slope is NOT SIGNIFICANT: the option to hide (or show) an OLS fit DOES
NOT EVEN EXIST on the dialog box you get when you edit a scatterplot.
Now, with this, I do have an issue! Why take this option away from the
user? Perhaps it should default to NOT plotting an OLS line when the
slope is insignificant BUT the option should be THERE when you edit the
graph.

scatterplot OLS fit issues
by John Paravantis
I too would have never guessed that it only displays the OLS fit if the
slope is significant.
I concur with Sven's opinion: I would rather have the decision lie with
me rather than on the machine and happenstance sample circumstances.
Finally, yes, adding linear, quadratic etc fits would be absolutely great!
As for the multi symbol labeling capability, sure, let's hold it off for
a future release.
Otherwise, me mouth is watering in expectation of version 1.5.1!
Methinks I have become a gretl ...addict.

Occasional problem with scatterplots
by John Paravantis
Allin,
Playing with the fatality panel data set from the Stock and Watson
sample files, I have notices that a problem crops up occasionally with
scatterplots.
Restricting the data set to a certain year (e.g. year=1984), I have
noticed when restoring back the full range and then applying some other
restriction (e.g. year=1982) when I plot a new scatterplot I DONT have
the OLS line appearing in the scatterplot NEITHER is there an option to
add one!
I know that I am not being specific enough as to when this happens; if
you think this merits special attention I would be happy to send a more
detailed message with specific things I did to cause this problem.

Some technical problem for translation
by Florent Bresson
Just two small questions.
1) I wrote to Michel Robitaille who was in charge of
the french translation of gretl, and asked him if I
could participate to the the french translation. He
answered that it was a good idea but wrote that I
should fill a form for the translation disclaimer of
the Free Software Foundation. Should I do this ?
2) I try to access to the fr.po file via CVS but
without success. I'm working on win XP, so I'm using
Putty and TortoiseCVS. I have registered a public key
on Sourceforge.net and, I think so, respected the
instructions for the cvsroot. But it fails every time.
So I need some help. Could someone give me the right
procedure to checkout ?

Suggestion on scatterplots
by John Paravantis
I have a suggestion for the next version of gretl.
A much needed (in my opinion) feature is the capability of plotting data
on a XY scatterplot in different symbols according to their membership
in groups, e.g. in "+" if some CODEVAR=1, in "o" if CODEVAR=2, "-" IF
CODEVAR=3 etc.
It appears that such a scatterplot is indeed available in Data>Graph
specified vars>XY plot with factor separation... BUT the factor may only
be binary (i.e.have 2 values).
This is an unnecessary restriction. In fact, such scatterplots would be
very useful in panel data analysis, for instance.
All in all, methinks this would be a VERY useful addition to gretl.
Friendly regards to Allin and all,

Getting ready for 1.5.1
by Allin Cottrell
Hello translators: I think most of you are now using direct access
to gretl CVS, but I have just sent an updated gretl.pot file to IRO
in preparation for the gretl 1.5.1 release.
I won't add or change any more translatable strings at this point.
But we're still taking bug reports. I'll try to track down the
issue Jack mentioned, with gretlcli.exe crashing in the win32
console.
Any test results for the model table, using the latest Windows
snapshot?

Here's my login for sourceforge : f_bresson.
Thanks

Then I can add you as a gretl translator and you can
get direct
access to the fr.po translation file via CVS.

Problems with 2SLS for SEM
by Al Leong
Hi,
while trying out the 2SLS estimation for a
simultaneous equation model: IS-LM Model (Asteriou,
2006), I ecountered the following problem (see test
case attached)
You can see from the attached output that although
three instrument variables (M, I and M_1) are
specified, only one, I , was used in the estimation.
Please advise.
Thanks and have a nice day.
