new things, and translations
by Allin Cottrell
A couple of things to note in current CVS and the current
Windows snapshot.
1) I have "rationalized" the syntax for the "restrict" command:
all coefficient arrays are now accessed using a 1-based index
(not 0-based).
2) I've added support for reading PcGive databases in the form
of in7/bn7 files. This is under the Databases item in the File
menu. I haven't seen a public specification of in7/bn7 format
so I've stuck to what I've been able to infer from examples.
That means that at present only annual, quarterly and monthly
data are supported. If anyone knows how, e.g. daily data are
handled in these files, please let me know.
Translators: The IRO robot seems to be "on holiday" -- at
least, I've had no response to my last submission of a gretl.pot
file. The current .pot (last updated 2006/08/03) is available
at
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/gretl.pot
I'm happy to accept .po updates via CVS or via email.

cosmetics for 1.6.0
by Sven Schreiber
Hi,
the German translation is more or less finished, although IIRC there is
still a .pot-change to come?
Some remaining small issues I discovered in the latest windoze snapshot:
- opening the pdf manual failes with the English message: "failed to
download file"; at the very least, this message should be localized
- similar for "there are no new files on the server right now"
- the version number in About... is still at 1.5.1
- the new menu entry "seed for random numbers" is missing in the po-file
- in preferences, can somebody think of a better tab title than "HCCME"?
I used "H(A)C" for now, but it's not much better I think. Maybe "Robust
Cov"?
- why is opening of PcGive and RATS files under database instead of import?
- in the ADF dialog, shouldn't constant/trend/quad trend be mutually
exclusive radio buttons instead of checkboxes?
- in spectrum estimation: I can't see any difference between selecting
the sub-menu entries "periodogram" or "Bartlett lag window", the same
things appear to happen (namely table and graph).
Thanks, I think gretl 1.6.0 is going to be pretty cool!

gretl won't shut up...
by Sven Schreiber
Hi all,
a strange thing just happened to me while looking at some data in gretl:
After hitting some key combinations (wrong ones), gretl suddenly started
reading the numbers -- I mean, literally reading, with an American
accent, in English, over the loudspeaker.
And closing gretl didn't stop it! I had to kill the gretlw32.exe process
(on Windows, obviously) in the task manager...
That was really spooky...
What's behind this?

Importing excel sheets for batch jobs..
by Antonello Lobianco
Hello.. while in the GUI it is possible to import Excel documents (and
it would be nice also openoffice), I can't see a way to do that using
the terminal..
