citing gretl
by Sven Schreiber
Hi all,
I'm going to cite (the use of) gretl in a paper as follows (bibtex format):
@MANUAL{CottrellLucchetti2007gretlmanual,
title = {Gretl User’s Guide},
author = {Cottrell, Allin and Lucchetti, Riccardo},
month = {May},
year = {2007},
owner = {sven},
timestamp = {2007.11.16},
url = {http://gretl.sourceforge.net/#man}
}
Is this ok, or does anybody have any suggestions?
Also, how about adding something like that to the homepage, saying
"please cite gretl when you use it"?
cheers,
sven

fcast and fcasterr in loop mode?
by Johannes Fichtinger
Dear all,
it seems like, the command "fcast" and "fcasterr" cannot be used in loop mode.
Is there any reason for that, or can that two commands be enabled for loop
mode also?
Btw, I realized this problem for some commands now, that they were not enabled
in loop mode and after my question here on that list, they were enabled in
the next release. Could it be possible to enable really *all* commands for
loop mode, or at least define exactly which commands for sure cannot be used
and enable all the others.
Greetings,
Johannes Fichtinger.

Normality Tests
by Talha Yalta
Hi all:
I am using gretl to teach the intro. to econometrics class.
Gujarati's text along with other popular texts such as Hill,
Griffiths,Lim mentions the Jarque-Bera normality test. Iknow that Lee
Adkins' ebook offers a gretl script for this test, however, I was
wondering if this test could be implemented.
If yes, I also wonder if it could be made available as an option for
the normality of the residuals under model tests. Is it possible to
also have an option to set the number of bins for the chi^2 test here?
Cheers,
Talha

ODS importer
by Allin Cottrell
In current CVS (and Windows snapshot) there's an Open Document
Spreadsheet importer
/File/Open data/Import/Open Document...
If people could test it, that would be very helpful. If it
crashes all over the place we can hide it for the forthcoming
release, otherwise leave it visible.
It does not currently have handling for string-coded variables,
only numeric data. It should be able to extract time-series
information from dates/periods in the first column reasonably
well.
Allin.

Help needed
by Marcos Larios
Hi all,
I've recently added to the server function 3 functions named Levene,
Bartlett and Variance, they all do variance tests to check if the variance
is equal between groups of the variable categorized against an other
variable. I would like some input about the functions per se, I'm not a
great programmer so perhaps the functions is doing something it shouldn't or
it can do thing in a more optimal way.
The third function (Variance) has the Bartlett and Levene functions, but I
don't know how to "erease" the first to function of the server. Anyway, I
just wrote to let you know about the function and that I need some testers,
and input about how well those functions do their job.

LaTex in Gretl on a Mac
by Neil Hepburn
Hi
I have a Mac and Gretl installed on it. I also have MacTex installed.
When I estimate a model, I am not able to copy the estimated equation
as a TeX file like I am able to do in the Windows and Linux
versions. Is it possible to configure Gretl on a Mac to do this?
Cheers,
Neil

Just after I sent the email I dug a bit deeper into the settings and
corrected the path to pdflatex and it works now.
Cheers,
Neil

Re: Excel 2003 files
by John Paravantis
Occasionally, I have come across CERTAIN Excel files that are formatted
properly for read into Gretl BUT have weird variable names (in the first
row). On such instances, as I recall, Gretl gives a somewhat cryptic
message about a character in a variable name (or the like).
I remember that I was annoyed that it did not SPECIFICALLY give
information on the offending variable, so I had to search all the
columns manually.
Other than these rather vague memories, I am afraid I cannot be more
specific. Neither do I possess such a file any longer.

Excel 2003 files
by Riccardo (Jack) Lucchetti
Dear all,
what follows is a summary of a recent exchange on the developers' list:
rumour has it that sometimes gretl can't open files created by excel 2003
properly. I don't have excel myself, but I ran some experiments using a
friend's computer and I was unable to generate realistic test cases in xls
format that gretl couldn't open. After my request, Sven tried too, but
with the same result. Allin then suggested that maybe the rumour
originated from files in the 2003 XML office format, which we know we
can't read presently.
So, as per Sven's suggestion, this is a request for cooperation: has any
of you come across an xls file created by excel 2003 which gretl couldn't
open? If so, could you provide us with it so that we try to figure out
what the problem is?
