saving icons when running batch jobs
by Stefano Fachin
I'll explain it better: I am running simulations which involve the creation of a large number of matrices, which in the GUI are all visible after the end of the job in the icons window (a very hand feature). I was wondering if there is a way of saving all the stuff at once, with some sort of "dump" command, without taking care of each one individually.
any way, thanks a lot Allin: the more I use Hansl the more I like it :-)

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you're talking about
saving a matrix to a text file, you want the mwrite()
function.

Reviewing -gretl- on Muon Software Centre
by Clive Nicholas
-gretl- 1.9.9, Kubuntu Linux 12.10
Does anybody know how to publish a review of -gretl- that can be viewed by
other on the Muon Software Centre? I can't find a solution anywhere! On my
machine, I see that there are 13 such reviews, the latest of which was
posted on April 5 last year. I intend to publish a favourable, but
constructive, review.
Some of you who have read these reviews may have noticed that one of them
was posted by a certain Willem H. Buiter on May 22, 2011, complaining that
-gretl- was 'not functional' and that he failed to get the program to run
after reinstalling several times before giving up! (I must confess to have
given up on -gretl- first time around because I couldn't successfully load
any spreadsheets into it, but I worked it out second time around!) To be
fair to him, he might have got it working by now.
Professor Buiter happens to be one of the world's most distinguished, and
influential, economists, having served as a member of the Monetary Policy
Committee of the Bank of England (which sets UK interest rates) for three
years in the late 1990s and is now chief economist at Citigroup (for more,
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Buiter). So, if you're using
-gretl- with some success, you can probably count yourself as very clever
indeed!!
Anyway, thanks in anticipation. :)

Gretl v1.9.11 won't start
by Clive Nicholas
I have an issue with the latest build version (1.9.11): it won't start!
However, I may have made an error. I went ahead with installing it
(successfully, eventually) without removing the secure version I already
had.
Once installed, clicking on the gretl icon inside the Kickoff menu produced
nothing. I then removed the installed gretl and then again. Still nothing.
I restarted the machine and logged back in - same result.
Sometimes it produces the message
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KDEInit could not launch '/usr/local/bin/gretl'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
but yet 1.9.11 was successfully installed, as shown here by way of excerpt:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
libtool: finish:
PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/sbin"
ldconfig -n /usr/local/lib/gretl-gtk2
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Libraries have been installed in:
/usr/local/lib/gretl-gtk2
If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
during execution
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
during linking
- use the `-Wl,-rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
- have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'
See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

Python and Gretl
by Pietro Battiston
Hello everybody,
I love Gretl's "foreign" code blocks capability, and would love even
more the possibility of using Python in them, which was at some time
suggested as easy to implement.¹
1) Has there been any development in this direction? If not, was it
because of lack of time/interest or because of unexpected obstacles in
the process?
2) In general, could it be feasible to apply structural changes on
gretl's dataset (i.e. remove/collapse observations) from foreign blocks?
Or will "append" remain the only reasonable channel of communication
from foreign blocks to gretl?
thanks
Pietro

Least squares/linear regression examples?
by Ryan Dagey
Hello Great Minds:
Long time listener, first time caller. We currently use gretl for our
in-house manufacturing system in various capacity. When I say gretl, I mean
a command line Linux version that we interface with using PHP, data points
stored in MySQL.
We now have a new calculation for Gretl, but unfortunately the guy who
handled all of this work has moved on. I am trying to work out a solution
to the new problem, which is undoubtedly quite simple to those wiser than
myself. We have a set of data points (happen to be hours on different job
numbers). When these points are graphed and the trend line applied, it's
clear whether the times are increasing or decreasing. We now want to
quantify this as part of an ongoing review of time submitted to the system,
so that we can determine for X amount of current jobs, whether overall time
is increasing or decreasing, and maybe by how much. I have a rudimentary
statistical education, so I've been doing some research and a linear
regression seems the best option for us. Ideally what we are doing is
supply a set of data points to gretly and having it provide us with some
approximation of what is happening-the trend-in the points. Please bear
with me, as I have to both come to terms with the statistical functions
required AND how to handle this using gretl, which I think is our best
option since we already have it integrated.
I was also thinking that maybe if there was a way to derive from the trend
line the slope, that might be exactly what we are looking for? A slope
should identify whether the times are increasing or decreasing and by how
much.
So can you guys provide me any reference pages on using gretl in this
fashion? Preferably over command line, which I can translate to PHP usage.
Any kind of GUI/Windows use is out, unless there is a clear understanding of
how to translate to the command line environment. Also, if my understanding
of what needs to happen is any way incorrect, feel free to correct me and
set me straight
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

sd function with matrix?
by Pindar
Hi,
there is a strange behavior when combining the 'sd' function with matrices:
1) I thought it flags an error - is it now allowed for matrices?
2) the result is not correct, but the 'var' function works with this
simple matrix in the example
<hansl>
matrix test = {-0.08142857;0.05560000}
eval mcov(test)
eval var(test)
eval sqrt(mcov(test))
eval sqrt((test[1]-mean(test))^2 + (test[2]-mean(test))^2)
eval sd(test)
<hansl>

Dear all,
I remember that once upon a time, there was a possibility to test the significance of included trend in estimated VAR model. I think that this option was under Test/Omit exogenous variables panel. Is it possible to bring it back?
Furthermore, is it possible to kindly ask you to implement Granger causality tests in VECM (in the future)?
Keep with good work!
