Professor Cottrell,
Thank you for a quick reply and thanks to Logan Kelly as well. I have been sitting here
teaching myself gnuplot in the hopes of accomplishing what a referee demands. I think I
discovered the problem. It was a misunderstanding on my part (this probably doesn't
surprise anyone). I need a canvas that is approximately square which requires changing
the set terminal command. I tried making the change as specified in the manual like so:
set term pngcairo font "verdana,8" size 480,480
I thought this would work as it is almost an exact copy of what is commented out in the
plot file generated by GRETL. However, it only resulted in craziness--dinging bells etc.
After spending some time (more time than I ever wanted to spend with a plotting program),
and noticing that when I started Gnuplot independently it automatically set the terminal
to windows, I finally used this command instead:
set term windows font "verdna,8" size 480,480
This allowed me to change the canvas size as needed. However, the size command would not
take measurements in inches (say 3in, 3in).
I also tried using pdf cairo and generating a pdf output file--but I couldn't make
that work either.
I'm sure that there is a better explanation for all of this, and I may still need
assistance, but, right now, I seem to be able to do what I need to.
Thanks to everyone.

I am trying to edit some of the plot commands as described in the
manual. Specifically, I am trying to change the canvas size for
pngcairo from 640,480 (the default size) to 480,480 or some size close
to this. When I make the changes as described in the manual (at
least, as I interpret the manual) either nothing happens or I get
dinging bells (which I am sure indicate some kind of error).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Please post a copy of a plot file modified as you describe. I think this is the best if
not the only way to diagnose the problem.
If the plot file is very big (includes a lot of data) feel free to send it to me
off-list.
