Dear Allin
I did some tests for the traditional Chinese translation on the
"fresh" installed WinXP and Ubuntu 8.10.
On WinXP:
The default fixed font (from CVS) in /Tools/Preferences is "Courier
new." This will not work for Chinese characters in ouput windows.
After tests, I found "Nsimsun" will be the best option for fixed font.
Though MS Mincho and MS Gothic will also work except in gretl console
in which there are some strange characters. For example, "\" will be
shown as "¥" in Traditional Window XP.
The default font set in gnuplot is "Verdana" in win XP. This font does
not work at all. The font should be (manually) changed to Tahoma (or
None) to show the correct Chinese characters in Title of plots/axes,
legends, labels.
On Ubuntu 8.10:
The default fixed font in /Tools/Preferences is "monospace." This font
works great for Chinese characters in ouput windows.
However, the default font in gnuplot,"vera" does not show correct
Chinese characters. Other three options, None, free sans, and luxi
sans cannot work either.
But if I save the plot to session as an icon and right-click on the
plot in the icon view to select "edit plot commands, and then push
the "Run" button, the Chinese characters will be correctly shown
without any settings of fonts.
Thanks

Dear Allin
Thank. I did not test the gretl 1.8.0 on a fresh Windows. I will find
one to test.
Yes, the code page of Traditional Chinese Windows is 950.
By the way, what software you would suggest me to use for updating the
CVS? I am new in using this.
