Thanks -- but just so that there is no misunderstanding about the
implications of this let me add a little more detail about the FRED plot:
They do it in a way so that the peak value location is identical to the
start of the shading. In gretl/gnuplot terms I think that the shading
would have to start in the middle of the period interval (which is
impossible or difficult to implement I guess).
With the git status quo (haven't really tested, just guessing) I think
the shading would start a little to the right of the peak value location.
And while I'm at it, for completeness: In terms of offered indicator
series, FRED has all sorts of variants of the NBER dating, with the
peak/trough dates either included or not.
