The message printed by gretl is simply relayed from gnuplot.
Try editing ~/.gretl2rc so that the Png_font line reads
Png_font = Vera 9
If that doesn't work, drop back to gnuplot 4.2.4 and wait for
libgd to get fixed (or better, replaced altogether).
