Bother. It's working fine to open a wide range of session files
on Linux, including file with problems of various kinds, which are
now mostly repaired automatically.
If you have time, could you send a trace from gretl run with the
--debug command-line option? Thanks.
Here's what Artur and I just got gretl to produce -- we couldn't copy and paste
(any hints how to store the debug output in a file on windows?) so this is a manual
transcript:

setlocale gives 'German_Germany.1252'
get_gretl_charset gave CP1252
