In the other email you also say that managing the gretl package for
Ubuntu with the Ubuntu tools didn't work. This very much sounds like
some problem for which gretl itself could not be responsible.
I was unable (i had some trouble in compiling the .tar ) to try if
the 2016c version was working.
In the gretl guide there is an explanation on what you need to do on
Debian-based systems such as Ubuntu. Installing the latest gretl version
would indeed be a recommendation (although it also has disadvantages of
course to deviate from the package management system of the OS).
So - really - any help or suggestion is very appreciated.
