That points me straight to a bug, now fixed. We were not handling correctly the case where LANG is not defined in the environment (and as a consequence you ended up with a "ghost" gretl TeX preamble file). Seems odd; I haven't heard of that before. One would expect something like LANG=en_US.UTF-8. Anyway, the fix is now in tonight's snapshot.
