OK, first just to be sure, you apparently want to build gretl from git
yourself, or you don't need any of the build-dep stuff.
Have we established that indeed you want to build (=compile) the gretl
executable yourself?
Next, I only have an older Mint version to look at, but there is a
system settings window called software package sources or something like
that (sorry, I'm re-translating from German). In that window, you just
have to tick a box (at the bottom for me) saying "activate source
package sources" or similar. Afterwards, you reload the sources via
apt-get update (or the GUI equivalent)
I still think this is correct. (Whereas my little detour about the
deb-src not being needed was wrong, as I now believe.) Have you tried this?
Sven replied:
And taking one step back, are you sure the deb-src things are
really
needed? The dev packages are needed for the build, yes, but they do not
live in the deb-src area AFAIK. Given that the gretl sources are also
not taken from the Debian/Mint release --instead the current sources
from git are used-- I don't see how any source packages are needed.
(Detour continued / not strictly necessary: As I said above, I now think
I was partly wrong here and that I misunderstood Jack. The dev packages
do not live in the src areas alright, but the listing of which dev
packages are needed should live in the gretl-src package from the
deb-src repos. For this information you would need the deb-src
activated, in the way suggested above.)
Sorry, but isn't all this where I came in? My OP already
established that
. sudo apt-get build-dep gretl
is choking on errors
Well actually just one error, "E: Unable to find a source package for
gretl".
Somebody please give a simple answer to a simple question: which
repository links or links are best to download and build the
dependencies for -gretl- on Linux Mint 18.2 if this is now the way we
must do it, even though it certainly wasn't before? Really, all this is
_needlessly_ frustrating.
I understand your frustration, but strictly speaking the packaging on
Linux distros isn't the responsibility of the projects themselves. It's
done by (volunteers from) the distro. Just to be clear, you don't have
to _build_ the dependencies even if in fact you want to _build_ gretl,
you would just have to install the dependencies.
Bottom line: Try ticking the box that says "activate the source sources"
or similar, then sudo apt-get update, then sudo build-dep gretl. Hope
this works.
cheers,
