I also built gretl under ubuntu 8.10 and tested it. But it does not
work
under ubuntu 8.10 (in zh_TW mode).
I know that it might be irrelevant to this issue since I never
successfully show Chinese characters in gretl's plots under
ubuntu (either 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, and 9.10).

The version of gnuplot shipped with those Ubuntu releases is
essentially broken with regard to production of PNG output.
