Hang on -- I thought Jack's students would've been installing gretl since early
childhood!! ;-)

An explicit uninstall-reinstall indeed eliminated those problems on the
Win-8-machine. I wouldn't have mentioned it on the list if it hadn't
been for Jack asking if there any problems on Windows 8 with recent
gretl versions.
I guess it is still possible that the vague problems that Jack's
students encountered have to do with the lazy installation over existing
previous versions; perhaps it has become more important with recent
versions to do it cleanly? OTOH, probably Jack's students installed
gretl for the first time in their lives and thus the reason must be
somewhere else (?).
