I lauch gretl_x11 from the command prompt, open the console, write "x=3" and
enter. then both the main interface and the console disappear. and I see there is a line
"Invalid instruction" in the terminal.

Well, it seems Mint is offering a broken build of a somewhat old
version of gretl (1.9.14 was released in November 2013). That's not
very nice.
To help to determine what might be wrong with this build, can you
try launching gretl_x11 from the command prompt in a terminal
window? (You might see something relevant on "stderr".)
Can anyone else using a Mint/Ubuntu build of gretl offer any wisdom?
