OK, I see what you mean. This problem seems to be a result of
brokenness on the OS X platform.
I don't think it is actually something broken.
An application such as Gretl.app manifests itself in the Finder in Mac OS CX as a single
entity (a package).
In unix terms it is a folder hierarchy following a strict set of rules.
When you replace an existing Gretl.app with a new Gretl.app it replaces the existing one
so everything that was added at some time will be deleted. Playing safe I would say.
Most applications in Mac OS X would save additional, modifiable, version independent stuff
in e.g. ~/Library/Application Support/<AppName>.
A lot actually do.
Why not ~/Library/Application Support/Gretl?
That way a user home directory doesn't get filled beyond what's there already.
However, I've put in place a
work-around: gretl in the OS X package will by default write
downloaded databases, function files, etc., into ~/gretl. I'm
not using ~/.gretl because that's mostly intended for
invisible stuff. We don't really want users poking around in
there -- assuming they could find it!
I can. And quickly too:-)
And I clean it every now and then.

Maybe we should enable use of a proxies that require
authentication, but it probably won't happen real soon.

The function packages can be downloaded via
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/gretl/cgi-bin/gretldata.cgi?opt=SHOW_FUNCS
I need to put a link to this somewhere, but if you know where
to look, it's there.
And as of today you can download the gretl databases as
zipfiles, via
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/gretl/cgi-bin/gretldata.cgi?opt=SHOW_DBS
There is a link to this on the "Data for gretl" page. And the
textbook data files are on the same page.
