Are you suggesting that something should be done or just that
the error message should be more informative?

Yes, this would be very neat.
OK, you can now do either --sheet=3 or --sheet="Sheetname". The
double quotes are mandatory when a name is given.

Yes, that's worth thinking about.
Also, the same syntax should be applied to the "append"
command.
