I had also your problems.
The package in the repository is faulty and I downloaded and installed
the latest version from the repository of Debian testing:
http://packages.debian.org/source/testing/gretl
Try the following:
- open Synaptic, search for gretl in the list and remove completely all
the deb packages related with it;
- download and reinstall the debian packages
By the way, for some features related with time series you need to
install also the following packages:
- x12a_0.2.10-2_i386.deb
- tramo-seats_98-2_i386.deb
