Are you trying the 2016c release or the current snapshot?
I just installed and ran the 64-bit snapshot (which dates from August 3,
since I've been offline for a while) on Windows 8 and didn't encounter any
problems.

I tried both versions. But I already solved my problem. My "sophisticated"
solution:
(1) I just installed 2016a;
(2) Uninstalled 2016a;
(3) And then installed current snapshot.
Now I'm almost sure that the problem is specific to my machine (same
problem occurs with R, 7Zip, Sublime Text, etc. I'll talk to IT guys here
from my work to check if there is something specific to Gretl (but I don't
believe).
