So I presume that with current gretl git/snapshot my "append" recipe should
work after all, provided one is working with a consistent set of Frederik's data
files (either all auto-corrected in gretl's manner, or all manually corrected in
an alternative but consistent manner).

I finally checked it all with the current snapshot (todays). The join command via the
matrix now works fine without the workaround. The append is faster and - given that my
"identifier" is "obs" - works fine, too.
If in future one could provide a unique identifier as an option in the append command
(perhaps even inkey and outkey, as in join), that would be even more user friendly ;).
