"No dataset in place" is expected if you try to run a
script that
references series without having opened or created a dataset.
To clarify: this error occurred on my student's laptop even though the data set was
open. That is, method (a) below didn't work.
In both cases I got the expected results, i.e. the model was
estimated and the main window showed the newly added variables.
As for the "added data" not appearing -- perhaps the script
contained an extra "open" which re-established the original
dataset?
I'll check this, but I'm almost certain there was no extra "open."

I've come across a puzzle in trying to help one of my students.
If I open consumption.gdt from the ETM data set, then run the
attached script, things work fine on my desktop (gretl 1.8.7)
and my laptop (1.8.6), both of which have Windows XP. However my
student, running Vista, gets an error saying "no data set in
place".

I modified the script to open the data set, add logs,
etc., and it runs fine for her. But, all of the generated
variables (c, u2, etc) are added to my data set but not to hers.
I suspect there is some confusion -- though I'm not sure what --
on your student's part. I tried doing the exercise on Vista both
ways: (a) start gretl, open the relevant data file, then run the
script as you posted it (without any "open" command); and (b)
start gretl, load the script and edit it so that it starts with an
"open" command, then run it (without first loading the data).

estimated and the main window showed the newly added variables.
