The fix you made works. Thank you very much.
But one problem remains. Now I can save and copy LaTeX versions of my output. But the
View command still doesn't work properly. The pdf file that comes up is garbled.
See the attached. The file "Saved" was typeset using MacTex (TexShop/MacTeX
2009). The "Viewed" file was what came out when I used the View command rather
than Save.
Also, sometimes the View process stalls altogether.
This obviously isn't a critical issue - I still can generate the output. But it would
be better if View allowed me to view the formatted output.

Thanks! That points me straight to a bug, now fixed. We were not
handling correctly the case where LANG is not defined in the
environment (and as a consequence you ended up with a "ghost"
gretl TeX preamble file). Seems odd; I haven't heard of that
before. One would expect something like LANG=en_US.UTF-8.
Anyway, the fix is now in tonight's snapshot.
