All is working at this stage. There are a few other things that the
new Linux user might watch out for. Some of the directories in my
cvs directory were owned by root and were not being updated. The
Ubuntu version of Gretl installs in /usr and not in /usr/local. You
must delete the /usr/gretl directory or the cvs version of the Gretl
gui appears to look for some files there and will not start.
In updating the cvs version should I delete gretl files from
/usr/local before updating or is it sufficient to just allow make
install to over write everything.
Finally thanks for your help. I probably made it hard work but there
is considerable satisfaction in seeing the finished version working
Best regards

You need to install the gettext package. From config.log:
configure:4029: checking for msgfmt
configure:4064: result: no
configure:4070: checking for gmsgfmt
configure:4101: result: :
configure:4152: checking for xgettext
configure:4187: result: no
configure:4230: checking for msgmerge
configure:4264: result: no
Something's not quite right with the test for gmsgfmt in
the configure script, but anyway, the message is clear.
Allin.
