menu Tools --> Preferences --> Fixed (or Menu) fonts
gives me a window : "scanning for (a number) fonts"
and immediatly Gretl crashes

Selecting either option works fine and -gretl- doesn't crash on my Kubuntu
Linux 13.04 system, so it must be your system or machine.
