Dear All,
Thank you for providing the image file for Gretl 1.6.5.
However, when I load the application on Leopard, I receive the
following error (with a crash):

I guess this has got to do with the compatibility issues between the
libraries in Tiger and Leopard. I have Xcode installed and it has both
directories for Tiger and Leopard under SDKs. I also ran otool on /usr/
lib/libiconv.2.dylib and here is the output:
/usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib:
/usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib (compatibility version 7.0.0, current
version 7.0.0)
/usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current
version 1.0.0)
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current
version 111.0.0)
So I really do not see the issue, however Gretl does see an issue! :(.
The otool output on the dylib under MacOS10.4u.sdk/usr/lib shows
compatibility only with 5.0.0. However, Gretl seems to have a
complaint with /usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib. I am puzzled.
Can someone please help? I would be really grateful!

Well, it's not gretl that's complaining, it's the OS X dynamic
linker, Dyld. This is confusing. I can think of two
possibilities.
(a) Is there a libiconv dylib in the gretl installation directory?
I can't remember offhand. But if there is, you might moving it
out of the way and see if that helps.
(b) The gretl DMG was compiled on an older OS X version. Maybe
the linker is looking for an older libiconv.2.dylib to match??
That is, maybe it's really loading from MacOS10.4u.sdk/usr/lib
even though it says "/usr/lib"?

Thank you very much for that help. It worked. I simply moved that
library to a different location and there was no problem.

I think it was loading the lib in the gretl package. The reason I say
this is because when I renamed the library in the 10.4u.sdk/usr/lib
directory, the complaint persisted. The complaint vanished as soon as
I followed your suggestion above.
However, there is a minor problem that is still persisting. I can open
gretl by typing ./gretl from the terminal window but unable to open by
double clicking the Gretl icon from Finder. Previously it gave a
report (which is what I reported earlier) but now the icon bounces in
the dock and then simply disappears. Is it due to the fact that I
receive two warnings at the terminal window when I invoke it by
typing ./gretl?

I doubt it. I suspect it's due to the very limited inter-version
compatibility of compiled Applescript (which is what that icon
calls). I've had no luck getting the Applescript supplied with
gretl 1.6.5 to work on any version of OS X other than the one on
which it was built.
But on a brighter note: you seem to know your way around OS X!
Might you be interested in building a new PPC version -- or
perhaps helping me understand how to build a universal binary?
If so, please feel free to contact me off-list. (I have both
limited knowledge of OS X, and limited access to Apple hardware; I
get occasional log-ins to my wife's intel iMac to build gretl.)
