I just tried the Ramanathan dataset data9-7 (and also s.

Thanks for the detailed report. I'll investigate. In the
meantime, I should say that the use of "dumbplot.gp" is a
work-around for features missing in gnuplot versions lower than
4.3...
OK, I've now investigated, using gnuplot 4.2 as supplied in Ubuntu
8.04. I can't replicate the problem, asking for the periodogram
for variables in the Ramanathan dataset data9-7.
Could you please give an example of a variable for which the
periodogram graph gives an error? Thanks very much.

Thanks! All is clear now: it's an internationalization bug: we
should be printing '.', not ',', in "722,922". I'll fix
that
later today.

IMHO, this internationalization case (using , instead of .) has caused too
many bugs and thus it should be abandoned: Always require the use of .
instead of ,

AFAIR most of those bugs occurred back in the days when scripts did not require periods as
decimal separators. That was the reason why scripts are not (allowed to be) localized
anymore.
Can you give some examples of bugs that are exclusively due to gretl's GUI being
localized?
Personally I don't use localized decimal separator settings, but I believe that
gretl's localization feature is a big plus for many international users. Students can
focus on the statistics instead of learning new ways to write numbers, for example. So I
would be reluctant to ditch it.

I tend to agree, given the time we've invested in getting this
right.
The trickiest point is when we're modifying code that has to do
with generating graphs. We have to ensure that any code which
prints floating-point numbers for consumption by gnuplot uses '.'
as decimal character. We have the mechanism to do that, but it's
very easy to forget, I've done it several times myself. But
usually people notice quite quickly, and once noticed it's easy to
fix.
