There's now a new iteration of gretl-quartz in place.
Command+H should now work for all top-level gretl windows (not
dialogs) and the same should be true for Option+W (window list).
I will treat it as a bug if there's a top-level window that I've
missed.

I've done some searching on Command period os x and found some interesting hits.
For example:

And I have seen it mentioned in a help file.
It could be a leftover of predecessors of OS X.
It works in many applications.
