Although there is an extremely helpful and informative page online regarding the
installation of Gretl on a Mac, Gretl does not want to work on my system as well as the
Apple products of a few of my classmates. We all have downloaded the appropriate software
(X11, GTK, etc.) and I have tried both the latest release of the product as well as the
current snapshot but neither seem to work. Once the software is downloaded and dragged
into the applications section (which normally installs most software automatically), I
attempt to open Gretl and instead of opening, the program immediately terminates. Any
suggestions?

Could you please give us more details? Which version of Mac OS X are
you using? Which version of Gretl?

For gretl on a current Mac, please:
1. Ensure you have gretl 1.9.7 for intel or the current
mac-intel snapshot from http://gretl.sourceforge.net/osx.html
2. Download the GTK framework from this (and ONLY this) link:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gretl/files/osx/GTK+.framework.dmg/download
3. Delete entirely /Library/Frameworks/GTK+.framework , so as
to ensure that no stale/incompatible GTK files are messing
things up.
4. Install the correct GTK framework from the dmg file (see
point 2).
5. In a terminal, execute
rm -f ~/.gretl2rc
6. Start gretl. It may take a while to start on the first
invocation as the font cache is built, but should start
quickly thereafter.
Gretl 1.9.7 with the correct GTK version is known to work on
Lion, but in the event it won't start on your system, please
open a terminal and do
cd /Applications/Gretl.app/Contents/Resources/bin
./gretl
This should provide some additional info on what's wrong.
