For the record, here's what Artur and I found. The gretl database
(.bin file plus .idx file) that Artur created was in fact
well-formed. The "data error" message appeared when he tried to
open the database via drag-and-drop onto the main gretl window.
Two things were not right here: first, opening of databases via
drag-and-drop was not supported and second, the error message was
not informative. Both points are now fixed in CVS and the
snapshots for Windows and OS X. You can drag and drop databases
onto gretl (native gretl ones, RATS 4 or PcGive bn7), and in the
event that you drop a file that gretl cannot handle you should get
a more useful error message.
