I'm afraid that at present X11 is an absolute pre-requisite for
using gretl on OS X. This may change at some point: there is work
in progress to develop a "native" version of GTK (the GUI toolkit
used by gretl) for OS X, with no X11 dependency. As soon as that
becomes available in a reasonably stable form I will switch over
to it.
In the meantime, I'm sure there's an Apple X11 kit on the OS X
Tiger installation DVD. I guess it's not installed by default,
but you can plug the DVD back in and select components to add.
