Hello all,
A brief note about one change in CVS and the Windows snapshot. I
noticed that some actions that add icons to the "icon view" were
not giving the user any feedback. E.g., main window, "/Add/Define
matrix..." A matrix is defined OK but the user might reasonably
wonder, "Where is it?". Or you run a script that adds some graphs
or models as icons via the "objectname <- command" mechanism, but
you don't see the icons.
So I've now made it that the econ view pops open automatically
when I guess people might want to see it. If you don't like
this behavior you can turn it off, by unchecking the box
"Show icon view automatically" under /Preferences.

a very good function and convenient. Thanks.
I have some additional questions about icon view.
1. Double-byte (Chinese) characters might be improperly shown for the
names of objects in the icon view.
I testes several situations and found that for example,
if the name is "123456789XX" where XX is Chinese characters, then
it is correctly shown.
but if the name is "1234567890XX" where XX is Chinese characters,
then it is NOT correctly shown.
2. After adding a scalar, how can I delete the scalar via GUI only?
It seems any kind of objects in icon view can possibly be deleted
except scalars.

I think this should now be fixed in CVS/snapshot.
That fix was fast. Thanks.
However, I found the other case that the Chinese characters is not
properly shown.
if the name of the icon is
"12345678XXYYZZ"
where XX, YY, and ZZ represent three double-byte characters.
Then XX is correct. YY is incorrectly truncated (1 byte left) and ZZ
is replaced with"..." (of course, no problem with ZZ)
That is, the problem is now on YY.
(My test was on windows snapshot built on 2009-05-03)

Sorry, I did not yet find any "delete" funciion for scalars in the
icon view. Do I miss something

I don't have very strong feelings about this, but I think that
reversing the default would kind of defeat the object. Experts
can easily turn the option off, while novices -- for whose benefit
the option was introduced -- would be relatively unlikely to find
it and turn it on, no?
Further thoughts welcome.

Something to be said for that.
I've turned the auto show option off.
This option leads to some remarks:
1. In the View menu you can choose Icon view and Scalars. Why not
matrices in the view menu?
The current situation only lets you see matrices in icon view.

Sorry, but I don't really understand. Matrices are present and
available in the icon view, as you say, and double-clicking shows
their content. For those who don't like to double-click we could
easily implement select-and-Enter to open them. Scalars have
their own viewer item simply because it would be insane to have an
icon for each scalar variable.

We've been over this before in the mailing list. I don't say that
the issue is resolved but I would ask: please think about how
_exactly_ this should be done. It's easy to say in general terms,
but (IMO) quite difficult to come up with a concrete design that
does not just over-complicate the main gretl window.

I have been waiting for this issue to come up in the list :-)
How about improving the main window so that the main window and the
icon view become the same thing?
Here is my suggestion:
1)- All objects such as scalars, matrices, variables (after all
variables are vectors) as well as models and plots are listed in the
main window.
2)- A fourth column named "Type" is added to the main window
specifying the type of various objects. (As you know, there are
currently 3 columns in the main window namely "ID#," "Variable name"
and "Descriptive label.")
3)- A "sort on click" feature is implemented so that, just by clicking
on the column heads, the user will be able to sort the objects based
on name, ID#, type etc. This feature makes the "Sort variables" item
in the Tools menu unnecessary as well.
4)- This setup also makes it possible over time to add more
functionality to the right click menu depending on what is selected.
For example, if the user selects a matrix item, the right click menu
could show the options to edit the matrix, display it, transpose it
etc.
5)- As for the icon view, in the View menu, a new "Detailed list view"
is added above the "Icon view" item. The detailed list view would be
the default view, however, the user could get all the objects
presented in the main window as little icons by selecting the icon
view.
6)- The icon view specific items such as the model table, the graph
page, correlations, notes etc. are moved to the toolbar at the bottom
of the main window.
7)- At this point, it would be nice if this bottom toolbar could also
float or anchored giving way to new toolbars in the future such as a
"Matrix operations" toolbar or a "Graphing" toolbar.
Implementing all these probably require substantial effort but I think
this setup would provide a better framework for future development of
Gretl. What do you think?

For example: using tabs we could click on the console icon (in the Gretl
main window toolbox) and open a new tab (instead of another window). I think
this feature could make Gretl interface "cleaner" and could approximate
Gretl to softwares that are very well known by all users (everyone uses
internet browsers).

if Gretl starts to use "tabs" just like internet browsers (Mozilla Firefox,
Internet Explorer, and Safari)?
I am not sure about whether my proposal would make things look too
confusing as long as all objects are specified with their types in the
column next to them and have their own nice looking icons in the icon
view. This setup enables easily performing complex operations via the
GUI representing an important innovation in the domain of econometric
software. For example one could in the future select combinations of
variables, scalars and matrices and do all sorts of operations using a
right click menu or a "Linear algebra" toolbar.
I know we have the console for doing everything but the same argument
can be made for performing any complex operation outside the domain of
econometrics. Some people prefer doing everyting using the console
instead of a GUI environment such as KDE or Gnome. The innovation here
is to make it possible to easily do everyting with a few mouse clicks.
Think of how Photoshop makes extremely complex calculations easily
accessible via GUI. There also exists command line tools such as
ImageMagic for performing complex operations on graphics files as
well.
On the other hand, I guess tabs could be nice too :-) This does not
cancel the other parts of my proposal regarding making the main window
switch between the icon view and detailed list view as well as being
able to sort items by cliciking on the column heads etc.

presentation, in particular, in the gretl main window (perhaps for
average users).
However, if we consider the benefit-cost on improvement of GUI and
functionality. I think the current gretl is straightforward enough for
normal users.
Why don't we focus more on, for example, adding more popular (or
recently developed) econometric methods.
For instance, some multivariate GARCH models or autoregressive
conditional duration (ACD) model.

of the features and the GUI should go together, if the former have a
