Responding to comments made by Sven a while ago, I'm thinking of
changing the default installation directories for gretl 1.6.0 on
Windows. The current default of "c:\userdata\gretl" makes sense
at Wake Forest University but probably seems odd to most people.
For the program itself, "c:\Program Files" (or equivalent) seems
the obvious choice. But what about the "user" directory? Where
should that go? Perhaps, in the same tree that Word and Excel
use for saving user files by default, but what is that? (Sorry,
I boot Windows very seldom and I don't know these things.)
[In case anyone suggests using the "HOME" environment variable,
let me pre-emptively state that that is not a Windows-ish thing,
and it's not possible to access it using the Inno Setup
installer with any degree of ease.]

Thanks, that is helpful. I think I can figure out how to find
the relevant directory, using Inno Setup, from that information.
Hopefully, it corresponds to {userappdata}.

I have found that GRETL's current installation allows
me to bypass calling the University IT when I need
to install it on a campus PC. On my home computer
where there isn't vast quantities of IT password
protection I tell the installation program to install it
to C:\Program Files\gretl without a problem.
So I worry that if the installation program is made
too "Windows" it will suffer installation delays (3 weeks
last time for me) when I needed IT to install GRETL in
a lab classroom. My vote would be for minimal
installation change.

Thanks for that info! It did occur to me to wonder whether
using a more "standard" set of installation directories under
Windows might create some permissions problems. Any other
thoughts on this?

We are only talking about changing *defaults*, not changing
possibilities, right?
When I install a new gretl (snapshot) version (on windows), I always
change the default "userdata" path to "programme" (name of program
files
in German windows). Peter could always apply his needed changes as well.
With respect to permissions, installing to "program files" (or localized
equiv.) could require admin privileges, depending on the settings of the
user account. In that sense, there is no difference to the current
"userdata" default. If by changing installation defaults you also want
to make non-admin installs easier, you would have to set the install
directory to something like the "documents and settings\username"
directory (I believe).

i.e. JMulTi.

In GiveWin 2 (which is old version) there is a possibility to specify your
own data frequency. Althrough annual, quarterly and monthly there is "other
data frequency" option. I think that in new GiveWin i.e. OxMetrics 4 there
is an option which handles daily data. This must be checked.

Maybe there isn't so much data but I use frequently both, gretl and
JMulTi...so it will be a great help.
After some more searching on the web I discovered some code for

in7/bn7 files, available from Doornik. But so far as I can tell it
contains no indication of how daily data are handled.
I tried with "other" option to include daily data with fixing 365 day year
but the problem is in overleap year which has 366 days. So, it's impossible
using this way.

It is for me....:))
Maybe there isn't so much data but I use frequently both, gretl and
JMulTi...so it will be a great help.
I've now added an importer for JMulTi data.

I was about to make basically the same point but Peter beat me to it. In
fact, if it were entirely up to me, I'd love it if gretl could be
installed to and run from a USB memory stick. I realize that this would
probably be a lot of work just to get around the inconvenience of
dealing with IT departments, so, two votes for minimal installation change.

You could have a look at how this problem is solved in R. They are
using Innno Setup too. Here are two references:

Their solution adresses the points made by Peter and James: It is
possible to install R on a machine without having full permissions.
And you can run R without any problem from an USB stick.
