Hello,
I've attached the dataset, the script that I use in order to import the
data and also the log, Gretl is build from sources (git, date of build
29.12.2015) and running on a Ubuntu 14.04.
Steps to reproduce the error:
-import the dataset, run

clear
set skip_missing off
open "bazaextinsabankscopeFINAL.xls" --sheet=1 --coloffset=5 --quiet
matrix M={dataset}
#print M
summary
# hello gretl, this is a panel! unde N este periodicitatea
scalar C=cols(M)
scalar R=rows(M)
scalar N=R/9
print C R N
setobs N 1.1 --stacked-cross-section
series year = time + 2004
summary
#no error#
< end hansl>

But when using the Summary option from the GUI menu gretl exits with the
error "core dumped"
The same dataset in R is working without any error (tested only the same
summary command).
Also when trying to run the script from
http://lists.wfu.edu/pipermail/gretl-users/2014-January/009553.html in
order to set the description to the variables I receive the following error:

? scalar i = 1
Generated scalar i = 1
? loop while getline(D, line) -q

Any ideas of what seems to be problem?

I have no idea. I imported your dataset by using your script and
everything is working quite nicely here.
Can you reproduce the issue with a smaller dataset (fewer rows/columns)?

It's weird that the summary command in hansl is working perfectly on
the big data while the GUI force close.

I also failed with the last script Instead, this is working:

endloop The first situation seems to be system dependent On Ubuntu 15.10 script go ok. GUI
crushes On XP it works OK with GUI with a single variable, when I selected more than one,
the menu item became inactive

The right-click "Summary" menu item was inducing a crash when the
selected series had a name of maximum length (31 bytes). That's now
fixed in git and snapshots.

The 'remove' command behaves in
the same fashion

One can do this way

I'm not sure if this a bug,
but in the same thread it is reported
the old script worked in 2014.

Ah, the example you cite dates from January 2014, and since then we
have made substantial changes to the gretl command interpreter. You're
right, the particular phrasing of that loop no longer works.
Arguably, it was only by a strange hack that it worked in the first
place. The argument to "setinfo" should be the name or ID number of a
series; at the time of writing that script, the scalar variable named
"i" was being read as containing the ID number of a series -- that's
what I'm describing as a strange hack (since in general in gretl
commands you cannot give the name of a scalar where the name of a
series is required).
Anyway, here's a version that will work with current gretl:
<hansl>
open prod.txt
string D = readfile("pnames.txt")
string line
loop i=1..$nvars-1 -q
getline(D, line)
setinfo $i --description="@line"
endloop
labels

Thank you!
It was not my question, but I
was interested: I mostly use neat data files
that come with Gretl, but some exercises
are based on local country data. Naturally,
I am lazy to copy-past labels (not to say
on typing). This possibility is excellent.
Furthermore, on labeling Mihai's xls, I
have learned how to find/replace line
breaks, etc. in LibreOffice.
