Hello translators,
I've just had my knuckles rapped for failing to consistently route
gretl translation through translationproject.org (see
http://translationproject.org/domain/gretl.html ).
There was a period when the tp robot seemed to be unresponsive and
I went over to mostly just using CVS. However, if the robot
problems are fixed, it probably would be a good idea to get back
on track.
Could translators please take a look at the tp page and see if
things need updating there? Thanks very much.

I would indeed find it helpful to just download the latest po-file
instead of setting up cvs (on systems where I haven't done so). But how
would the edited file get back to the project (i.e., to you/cvs)?
And with respect to the status of Markus Hahn, I guess I just have to
edit the header of the de.po file to make myself the "last translator"?

possible via sourceforge's cvs browser. So I guess somebody would have
to explain to me what the advantages of that translation project are.

When I started to translate gretl I didn't know anything
about "cvs", "msgmerge" or "msgfont" programs so the TP
Robot was a very
useful tool. The TP Robot automatically checks the files you send and tells
you (very ironically) what the errors are.
(Now I know that you may use the msgfmt program to do the same checking as the
Robot: msgfmt --statistics -c -v -o /dev/null name.po )
In the period when the robot was not responding I learned a bit about CVS, and
so I use it now. But CVS is not easy to configure. I had not send a
translation for several months. I suppose a Kubuntu update (or may be, my
error) broke my cvs configuration, so yesterday I lost an hour reconfiguring
before I finally got it and commited the es.po file to the repository.
Apart from the cheking, another advantage of the TP Robot is the
acknowledgement to the translators. Spain is a very burocratic country and we
continuosly need certificates of our work. Being registered between the FSF
translators and listed in the Translation Project pages is a way to obtain
this official acknowledgement.
Translating a .po file is a very easy task, only requiring the use of an ascii
editor (Although there are more sofisticated editors that helps a lot in this
task: kbabel, emacs, poedit, ...). If we do not require to the translators to
learn the use of cvs, msmerge, etc we can put the things easier for them and
so favour the extension to other languages.
I think it is not convenient to be continuosly updating the translation of the
XX.po files because some changes in the gretl cvs files are only transitory.
I think when the last changes seem to be definitive we can stop some days and
dedicate a period for translating (As Allin is doing lately). And this way of
doing the things is perfectly compatible with the use of the TP Robot.
So I vote for the TP Robot.

the TP.
I expect it also may make life easier if people are cooperating on
a translation. On the other hand, if just one person is
in charge of a given translation over a given period, and if that
person is cvs-savvy, it's probably easier to bypass the TP.
Perhaps we can get the best of both if people just tell me if
they'd prefer to have their translation marked as "external" for
the purposes of the TP. Cri has said he's like to have this for
the Italian translation. Anyone else?

Hi All,
This is the first time I hear of TP!
I started the translation process taking the risk of other translators
working in the same files, always using the CVS process.
I have prepared scripts for sending the pt.po and pt_BR.po files to CVS,
but I like the TP concept of official translators and project coordination.
I would not like to see the Portuguese versions marked as external
languages, but would still like to use the CVS system.
Having my name associated to Gretl's translation makes me proud, and
contributed for getting a job as Technical Editor and Communicator in a
large multinational company.
Too bad that there is no feedback from Portuguese speaking users about
the translation, or even other collaboration on the translation (that I
got from Brazillien users). If TP makes more visibility of this project
then is welcome.
So, Allin, if is not possible to have both CVS and TP systems working, I
put in your hands the decision to choose the system you think is best
for my language. (sorry :) )

Since this is for the users list, I would like to announce that I am
(slowly) working on the translation of the help files "Command
Reference", "Online Help", and "User Guide". I have some progress
alphabetically for the commands help, completed until the "c" starting
commands. I have the TEX files structure prepared and working with a
complete section and most of the images updated. So if there is someone
that would like to have this CVS structure to help me in the Portuguese
translation, please let us know for me to coordinate with Allin and Jack
those files uploading.

Indeed it is perfectly possible to keep using both TP and CVS, as I've
personally done until now. You commit updates to CVS when you prefer, and when
you receive the file from the TP robot, just msgmerge into it the content of the
(updated) CVS file and send it back to the robot.
So if there is someone that would like to have this
CVS structure to help me in the Portuguese translation, please let us know
for me to coordinate with Allin and Jack those files uploading.
There's one thing on the TP site that could really help you with that: many
national teams have a mailing list where translators can help each other and
coordinate the translation/revision process; I don't know if this is the case
for Portugal or Brasil, but you should definitely check the TP site, I found the
Italian TP community really helpful.

I guess I also want to bypass the TP thing for now, so please also treat
de.po as external.
(One of the reasons is this "send in a written disclaimer and wait one
month for it to be processed" thing that I read on their webpage. For
the present purpose this seems a little exaggerated to me -- because
even though it may surprise some of you to hear that, it's a cliche that
all Germans are so bureaucratic.)
