Dear all,
Seems that the option --www in the open command does not work in my
case.
It does not matter whether the database is installed or not in the
machine
For example:
<\hansl>
clear
open fedstl --www
data isratio
</hansl>
returns a message in a new window: Error attempting to open file
and within script the message
Error executing script: halting
open fedstl --www

I can confirm that, and sorry, no advice.
Furthermore, I see that one the one hand there's:
'File/Databases/on Database server' --fuzzy retranslation from German,
sorry-- with fedstl for example, but there's also:
'File/Open data/Example data/<button:>Look on Server' with wooldridge
for example.
Even as a very-long-time gretl user it's not clear to me why there are
these two different repositories and different ways to access them.

Thanks for the report, Ioannis. That option got broken at some
point. It's now fixed in git and snapshots will follow.

Even as a very-long-time gretl user it's not clear to me why there are these
two different repositories and different ways to access them.
The example data files are self-contained datasets: "open" one and
its entire content is dumped into gretl's workspace, replacing
anything that's already there.
A gretl "database" is (generally) a large collection of series of
various frequencies: "open" one and nothing happens except that it
becomes accessible via the "data" command. Generally one constructs
a working dataset by pulling selected series from one or more
databases (which will require compaction or interpolation if the
frequencies of the selected series differ).
Different formats, different means of access, different things
altogether.

Right, but what is the rationale for having those datafiles only on the
server and not shipping them with gretl like the other example datasets?
With date stamps between 2003 and 2011 it's not like it's a brand new
update. If historically it was thought that the files are too large for
inclusion, then maybe we should reconsider, given the zipped and binary
options for datafiles that were introduced later I think.

Right, but what is the rationale for having those datafiles only on the

There's a large number of textbook datafiles available and many of
them are likely to be of little interest if you're not using the
textbook in question, plus it's not exactly onerous to download an
extra collection that you want.
That said, we could include in the package the files pertaining to a
few of the more widely used texts -- maybe Wooldridge and
Stock/Watson? What do others think?

What about a palliative solution:
make script correspondence to
File/Open data/Sample file... Look on server button
say,
install POE4data --from-server
