Of course we all know that we can use gretl for producing pretty graphs.
Then, you can save them in some format (eg pdf) and include them in your
documents: slides, article, PhD thesis, whatever. We all do that.
However, if you need to customise them, the choice of the TikZ format may
be especially convenient for LaTeX users, since a TikZ file is essentially
a (relatively little) text file in which you can insert graphical
elements, text, TeX maths and so on.
Since turning a gretl graph into a TikZ file is quite easy (thanks to
gnuplot), I wrote a little "how-to" on the gretl wiki.

Up to a point, it's a matter of taste: TikZ builds on pgf, which makes
your figure more "TeX-ish" and it integrates better with the rest from a
visual point of view: for example, it uses the same font as the rest of
your document for labels and so on. Moreover, it's relatively easy to
perform marginal adjustments, such as aligning elements _perfectly_ (since
you position them numerically/programmatically, rather than by using a
mouse) if you have to. Finally, you can add anything you want to your
picture, including labels and formulae, so if you want to put something
like $\pi = \int_a^b f(x) \mathrm{d} x$, or "see eq. \ref{moo}", it's very
easy to do so.

I looked at your examples in the wiki. The "slow easy way" works OK. But
in the "fast easy way" I only obtain the .plt file. I miss a way to run
gnuplot from inside gretl and put the .tex files in the correct place.
My script is

option with-boxes=tbal

tried several ways of running gnuplot to create the .tex files in the

(or whatever directory you prefer) as the first one in the plot
environment, all the .tex files go this directory.
Ir remains the question of how to run smoothly gnuplot on an input file
without receiving errors (and only run). A possibility is to allow for
shell commands and run
!gnuplot gpttmp01.plt
but this is not very smart. May I suggest a new option to gnuplot gretl
command (and plot environment) --output=run?

It works !
And the '--output=(a)dotdir/empty.ps' option is a very good solution.
It's a very clever solution, as expected from Jack, but I'm not sure
about "good" ;-)
There's something new in git (and snapshots). It's somewhat half-baked
and I won't document it yet, but take a look...

If gnuplot supports Lua/TikZ, use of the ".tex" suffix with the
--output option will call for a TikZ file. If not, it will instead use
gnuplot's cairolatex terminal to generate a pair of files tradebal.tex
and tradebal.pdf (the former does "includegraphics" on the latter).
Graphics produced by these two methods look pretty much identical.
This automatic procedure doesn't invoke the "createstyle" option for
the tikz terminal (which shouldn't really be necessary if gnuplot is
installed correctly). However, if you want that you can insert
literal set term tikz createstyle
into the plot block.
