Re: Gretl on Mac OS-X Leopard (Allin Cottrell)
by Gordon Hughes
I have been experimenting with Gretl 1.7.0 on two Intel Macs - one
running OS-X Tiger (10.4.11) and the other running OS-X Leopard (10.5.1).
On the Tiger machine I can run 1.6.5 without any hitches. It starts
X11 and then presents the standard Gretl screen. Version 1.7.0
starts X11 but fails to start itself. When I follow the long route
via /Applications/Gretl.app/... it gives the error message that I
reported earlier.
On the Leopard machine neither version 1.6.5 nor version 1.7.0 will
start X11. Attempting to run version 1.7.0 after starting X11 first
generates the library error message. As others have reported,
version 1.6.5 seems to run properly in similar circumstances.
Just to complete the story, I downloaded the version 1.7.0 dmg file
on November 29th.

All you have to do is to include the observations for which you need the
forecast in the data file before estimating the OLS. For example, if
your regression use data is spanning from T1 to T2 and the "out of
sample" forecast will be done for data from (T2+1) to T3, the data file
you load in Gretl must include the whole data, from T1 through T3. Just
before you proceed with the OLS regression switch on the subsample T1
to T2 what leaves room for out of sample forecasting.
Buona fortuna, e facci sapere
Artur

GRETL on a network
by Jonas Rasimavičius
Dear Andreas,
Thanks for a quick response. Our techie tried precompiled versions also (at
least that is what he told me). As far as I understand, the precompiled
versions are for 32 bit systems and everything that is supposed to run on a
64 bit system has to built form scratch. I've seen instructions at
http://gretl.sourceforge.net/win32/gretl_network.html also and send a
reference to our IT guy. Unfortunately it didn't help.
Best regards,
Jonas

Hi,
First, try to use the precompiled version, i.e. do not compile from source.
Second, have a look at the instructions for running gretl over a network at
http://gretl.sourceforge.net/win32/gretl_network.html
Best regards
Andreas

GRETL on a network
by Jonas Rasimavičius
Dear Colleagues:
I teach principles of econometrics (among other subjects) at the ISM
University in Vilnius, Lithuania. In our computer lab classes we have
computer terminals connected to the Windows 2003 server (64 bit system)
which runs in a terminal server regime. Our university has the SPSS v.15
available to students and instructors at our facilities, however I am not a
big fan of SPSS. This semester I recommended my students to try GRETL at
home and I regularly use it myself. I think it would be great to have GRETL
also in the computer lab, if not now then at least in the future.
Unfortunately our IT guy was not able to get GRETL installed on our server.
I believe he tried to compile the needed files using the source posted at
http://gretl.sourceforge.net/ but somehow could not succeed.
So I would like to ask you maybe somebody had a similar problem? Maybe you
could give some advice about it. If you need more technical details about
the IT system at our university or what specifically went wrong I will be
glad to provide it. Sorry for taking your time and thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Jonas

Re: Gretl on OS X Leopard

I also discovered that Gretl did not play well with X11 running on
Leopard. However, I have found that the solution is to manually start
X11 first and then start Gretl and then everything works fine.
Cheers,

Gretl on Mac OS-X Leopard
by Gordon Hughes
This is a general warning. I have recently upgraded the version of
OS-X on a Mac to version 10.5 (Leopard). I have found that Gretl
does not seem to work with the new version of X11 in Leopard. Nor am
I able to follow the debugging instructions given in the Readme pdf
file because I cannot get to the directory Gretl.app/...
specified. I was able to get Gretl to work with version 10.4 (Tiger)
of OS-X without any significant difficulty.
From brief investigation it seems that Apple has a large number of
unresolved problems with X11 in the initial release of Leopard, so
that I suspect that it may not be worth trying to get Gretl to work
with Leopard until these problems are sorted out. This is not
important for me because I can use Gretl on a Windows PC or on a
Windows virtual machine on my Mac via VMWare Fusion. However, for
those without such options it may be worth postponing any planned
upgrade to Leopard until they release version 10.5.1 (or later) with
a version of X11 that functions properly.

Forecasting
by guido mastrolilli
Hi,
I'm a new GRETL user's and I have problems with forecasting.
I estimated a regression with OLS and i like to do a forecast out of sample. Is it possible?
When i try Analysis, Forecast, i receive the message: "there are no observation available for forecasting out of sample. If you wish, you can add observation, or you can shorten the sample range over which the model is estimated."
I would like to do a real forecast out of sample, how can i do?
Thanks,
Guido

question about TSLS output
by Sven Schreiber
Hi, yet another TSLS question from me I'm afraid...
The TSLS command also prints the Hausman and Sargan tests, so far so good.
Then after that *sometimes* it also prints the value of the F-statistic
in the first-stage regression, giving a rule of thumb for weak
instruments. But it doesn't do that every time, and I fail to see the
rule when does it print this information and when does it not. Could
somebody please explain?
Also, I don't see any remark in the output on whether I used a HAC
covariance matrix estimator or not. (This actually also seems to apply
to plain OLS, was this the case already in earlier versions? All this is
with 1.7.0 on windows.)
Thanks,
Sven
